A bounce in your step

What’s the best way to deal with negative thoughts?

I’m not even kidding. You don’t have to join a gym or run a marathon. Just put on your shoes and leave the house.

Walk briskly for an hour straight. When your heart is beating fast, you are sweating and your feet start hurting, you’ll notice that the hold of all the negative thoughts will grow weaker.

Walking is an under appreciated form of activity. Ofcourse I’m not saying that the sight of nature and the wind blowing through your hair will make you forget your problems.

I’m saying that your problems will look small when you see a giant tree with its branches swaying in the wind. You will think that this mighty tree was once just a normal-sized tree too.

It endured far too many strong winds, rain and thunder. And despite all of that, it kept on growing.

And when you’ll see people through their open windows sitting on their couches, cooking in the kitchen, studying on their desk and smoking in the balcony, you’ll think that maybe everything does work out. Maybe all I have to do right now is take one step after the other.

And when you’ll turn a corner and see an old woman walking with her back bent forward, struggling to move with a cane in her hand, you’ll think to yourself that rushing will never help. Everything happens when it needs to happen. You have time and a bounce in your step. These are the two things that woman thinks about everyday.

So when you come home your skin is glowing, your breathing is steady, and for the first time in a long time, your mind feels lighter. Your problems may still be there, but so are you, and you’re stronger than you were an hour ago.
